Sal La Rocca, double bass player of Sicilian origin, returns with a new, profoundly different project, continuing to defend, more than ever, a hard bop or post bop jazz, biting and groovy.
For his new quintet, Sal has surrounded himself with the incomparable Igor Gehenot, whose percussive sound, tinged with Caribbean tones, makes for warm, inviting music. Phil Abraham joins the band with some fine textures, highlighting Sal La Rocca's compositions. The double bassist is also supported by Maayan Smith on tenor sax and Umberto Odone on drums, whose temperaments and styles quickly win them over.
SLR5 showcases the energy and cohesion of each soloist. It's resolutely optimistic and catchy. This is music that gets you going straight away, that makes you think of the sea and the beach, and makes you want to dance, hug and laugh.... This is the strength of a close-knit group.
