LAKECIA BENJAMIN

Phoenix is the highly-anticipated new album from alto saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin. Primarily, it features original compositions written throughout the seasons and is a very personal album, composed during the pandemic with the sense that, like a phoenix, we will also rise from our ashes.

Lakecia Benjamin is a 3-time GRAMMY nominated saxophonist, arranger, composer and teacher based in New York. Her music offers a unique blend of R&B with several styles of jazz and funk. Her warm, resonant tone, which can be compared to that of Johnny Griffin, lends itself to any form of music she chooses to play. In addition to honing her talents with Clark Terry and, later, Terri Lyne Carrington, she is also a noted accompanist to singers and musicians, including Gregory Porter, Stevie Wonder and Theo Crocker. When Lakecia Benjamin released her debut album “Retox” in 2012, the jazz world was unanimous: it was a masterpiece from a promising jazz talent. However, it took six years for the next album, “Rise Up”, to see the light of day. Her latest opus is not just an ode to heroes such as the artist Basquiat and jazz legend John Coltrane, but also to Wayne Shorter, her favorite musician, who died earlier this year. This being the first time a saxophonist of this stature is in Liège, it should not be missed under any circumstances!
