Arooj Aftab was born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to Pakistani parents. Her family returned to Pakistan in the 1990s, where Aftab found inspiration in Lahore’s lush gardens, intricate architecture, and Urdu poetry. She later emigrated to the United States to study at Berklee College of Music, earning a degree in music production and engineering. In 2011, she was named one of the 100 best young composers by National Public Radio and was featured in The New York Times’ list of the best concerts of 2012.
In 2021, her album Vulture Prince received unprecedented critical acclaim from The Guardian, Time Magazine, Pitchfork Best New Music, Rolling Stone, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, and many others. Former President Barack Obama included the single Mohabbat in his official summer playlist for 2021, and her rendition of Mehram for Coke Studio Pakistan garnered over 11 million views.
In 2022, composer and singer Aftab joined Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan as the second Pakistani artist ever nominated for a Grammy, in the categories of Best New Artist and Best Global Music Performance. She became the first Pakistani to win a Grammy, securing the Best Global Music Performance award in 2021. Since then, Aftab has been invited to perform at major international music festivals, including Coachella, Glastonbury, Primavera Sound Barcelona, Roskilde Festival, and the Montreal Jazz Festival. She has also performed at prestigious arts institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and The Broad.
Aftab was awarded a United States Artists Fellowship in 2023 and won the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Music. She has signed with Verve Label Group, a division of Universal Music Group, and is currently working on the follow-up to Vulture Prince. She resides in New York.
